Another Point of View

This one, 4th of a series of 5 (see first post), was rather awkward to do. I had a triangle of masking tape on my little table-top mirror. To see my profile, however, I needed a second mirror to see the first. Perhaps next time I should try to paint the top of my head. Hmm...how many mirrors would I need then?

All the Better To See You With.

Anyone who knows me, knows I love eye glasses--all styles. (And those who don't know me, will notice my penchant in these self portraits!)
Phooey on those old 'beauty' charts that determined which frame style was the (only) shape suitable for your face shape.
If the eyes are the windows to the soul, then celebrate them! Glitter! Color! Rhinestones! Whoo-hoo!

Isolation

Today I felt so isolated. How is it possible to be so alone among people you know?

Snowflake People

I'm not even sure what these are called--those snipped, folded lengths of paper that unfurl to chains of repeated shapes like beads on a string. I remember grade school ceilings filled with hanging snipped paper snowflakes. I clipped the classic 'girl in a dress' shape. Each one may be a mini-me. Today, I wanted only to enjoy color!

a la Van Gogh

Though the result seems a bit vague, I chose to use only diagonal lines.
Thank you Post-Impressionists!

X-ray of Egypt

Remember those advertisements on the back pages of comic books? Do you remember the quirky little cartoon of a boy wearing x-ray glasses?
I imagined myself as an ancient Egyptian with x-ray glasses. Here I draw her seeing through to the skeleton of the lion in the cartouche of my name. Imagine looking into a sarcophagus!

The Orphan

This one perplexes me. I have the book 642 Things To Draw. The book is full of pages with empty boxes with a drawing prompt tucked in the corner. This one was labeled Orphan.
I saw that word and was riveted to it. Both my parents had recently passed. Even though the word 'orphan' typically refers to a child, and I am well into late adulthood, I felt the weight of that word. My parents are gone.
I decided to draw me, the orphan.
It happened that the mirror I had set-up was elevated from where I sat. I paid no particular attention to this until I finished my sketch. By drawing myself looking up, I seemed to have drawn a young version of myself--which was quite unintended! Without being aware of it, I had drawn the child in me who misses her parents.

Orange, It Is.

Ok, ok. Technically, this isn't a drawn self-portrait, but it is a photo of me. Who knew that one could have such fun altering a photo.

Wait! I Got It!

What to draw? What to draw?
Often I'll sit with pencil in hand and have absolutely no inspiration.
A-Ha! Then the proverbial lightbulb, that comic book convention that tells us the character has an idea, pops up. Literally! ...well, on paper anyway...

The 2nd One

A 2nd triangle of the series of 5.. With 8" sides, it's just a wee thing.

Bin Delights

A favorite pastime is perusing an art supply shop--particularly the discount bin. You never know what treasures you'll find. On this particular day I found 5 small triangle canvases, the sides were just 8". I had no idea or plan for them, I just knew I had to have them. Well, it seemed that the canvases needed to percolate in my storage cupboard for a few years until I had the 'A-ha! I finally know what to do with them!" moment. I pulled out my little round mirror and blocked off a triangle with masking tape.
What a hoot! I had a great time!
